Tower of London
Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress, more commonly known as the Tower of London and historically as The Tower, is a historic monument in central London, on the north bank of the river Thames.
During February 2009 Pectel visited site to give advice in relation to some urgent maintenance works within the Deputy Wardens flat, number 3, Old Hospital Building; A leak to a lagged hot water pipe within the main service riser situated between the utility room on the ground floor and family bathroom on the first floor required repair. It was necessary to ensure that the asbestos containing pipe insulation was thoroughly saturated utilising injection needles and surfactant via a suitable sized injection machine to prevent or minimise fibre release during the removal process. Once achieved the removal of the insulation and subsequent decontamination of the enclosures ensued followed by the completion of a four stage clearance test, carried out by an independent analytical company. The enclosures were then removed in their entirety and the heating engineers repaired the leaking pipe. Finally we installed new thermal insulation in the form of foil faced pipe sections, the riser panels were replaced and the area reoccupied by the tenants.
Previously Pectel were called upon following an accidental disturbance of insulation within the Lanthron Building (maintenance area). The works comprised of the environmental clean of the basement power room under fully controlled conditions. Subsequent encapsulation of the damaged insulation using water based copolymer coating, which cures to form an elastomeric skin with exceptional resistance to surface spread of flame. An initial mist coat of Firecheck, followed by a Firecheck embedment coat fully reinforced with Reemat Premium GFM and a further top coat achieve a robust system that completely encapsulates the asbestos in a seamless membrane.
