Dragon Project, Winfrith

The project entailed extensive enabling works for UKAEA to facilitate the de-commissioning of the Dragon experimental nuclear reactor at Winfrith in Dorset. The works were carried out in collaboration with Costain as the management contractor and Studsvik, the nuclear de-commissioning expert, within the tight control procedures operated within the facility.

Through a phased programme of works Keltbray carried out extensive asbestos removal and service / controls termination and strip out works which enabled areas to be freed up for structural dismantling and controlled demolition works.

The project was part of the UKAEA’s de-commissioning programme for the facility which will ensure that the site is available for non-nuclear use by 2020.
